mentally-illectric:

things i needed to hear in health class:

  • puberty might make you squishier and its ok
  • vaginas have a smell and it’s a ok
  • all kinds of people with all kinds of bodies have gr8 sex
  • genitals do not all look the same and variety is rad
  • people have stretch marks sometimes
  • people have pimples on their butts sometimes
  • people have cellulite sometimes
  • gender =/= sex
  • sex =/= scary danger FEAR
  • bodies aren’t scary or gross or sacred
  • everything is ok

What I missed while running with headphones
was the sound of a guitar
played by a man sitting under a tree by the water,
making music for all those who crossed his path.
I only caught sight of him
when I turned to tie my shoe.

What I missed while running with headphones
was the melody of the creek
babbling and splashing beside me.
I only heard it when my earpiece got tugged
while scratching my neck.
I took the other one out because it’s music
was better than the one I was blasting.

What I missed while running with headphones
was the sound of a raccoon
rustling at the foot of a tree beside me.
I only noticed when my nose and his
were two feet away from each other.
Startled, we both jumped back,
each afraid of the other.

What I missed while running with headphones
was the sound of footsteps following me.
I don’t know how long for,
because I couldn’t hear them.
My limbs went numb when I turned and saw him.
He didn’t jump back.
He reached out to grab me.
It was only me who was afraid.

A Poem By A Woman Running With Headphones (via mariacenzina)

1. Your skin may never be perfect, and that’s okay.

2. Life is too short not to have the underwear, the coffee, and the haircut you want.

3. Everyone (including your family, your coworkers, and your best friend) will talk about you behind your back, and you’ll talk about them too. It doesn’t mean you don’t love each other.

4. It’s okay to spend money on things that make you happy.

5. Sometimes without fault or reason, relationships deteriorate. It will happen when you’re six, it will happen when you’re sixty. That’s life.
